Bennett-May-Giles County Funeral Home Minta Lee Cardin passed away peacefully Monday morning, July 14, 2008 at the age of 86 at her residence in Florida. A memorial service was held Thursday, July 24, 2008 at 11:00am at Maplewood Cemetery with Rev. Wayne Davis officiating. Minta was born on March 10, 1022 to Mr. and Mrs. Lee Wilburn Holland Sr. in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. She grew up in Fayetteville, Tn. with her brothers, Lee Wilburn, Jr. and Tom, and sister, Itasca. She was a happy child, and always willing to help at home and at her father's grocery store. In high school, she was a member of the basketball team. Melvin and Minta met at a basketball game between their rival high schools. Melvin and Minta Cardin were married in 1940. Melvin served in WWII overseas and returned safely to Giles County in 1945. The young couple moved into their home on 535 College Street that was built by Melvin's father, Raymond Cardin. Minta and Melvin received their greatest gift on July 18, 1948, the birth of Susan Kay Cardin. Minta often described Susan as her beautiful angel. She was their pride and joy. Minta was the leader of Susan's Girl Scout troop throughout her years of schooling. She was a talented seamstress and made beautiful dresses for her daughter. Church life was Minta's passion. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Pulaski since 1948. Minta was always willing to lead the women in prayer or bible study. Melvin was very proud of her ability to speak in front of groups at church. She would also provide food and companionship to ill church members. Minta's life in Pulaski was filled with countless events at the church from Christmas bazaars to spaghetti suppers. Minta was always ready to get together with friends. She loved playing bridge, going to community events and talking with friends over coffee. She would often share her homemade "goodies" with others. Minta was loved by many and known for her cheerfulness, kindness and giving spirit. She was preceded in death by her, parents, Lee Wilburn & Grace Holland, Sr., daughter, Susan Kay Cardin along with brother and sister Tom Wilburn & Itasca Dilworth. She is survived by her, her husband of 68 years, Melvin Cardin of Florida, brother, Lee Wilburn Jr. of Murfreesboro, Tn., son-in-law, Doug Porter of Florida, 3 grandchildren, Kelly Porter Smith and husband David of Florida, Ginger Harrison & husband Robert of Florida, Brad Porter and wife Libby of Florida, great-grandsons, Harrison Smith Ford Porter.
